The Plunge: Black First-Year Retreat

plunge

The Plunge: Black First-Year Retreat is designed to help connect incoming Black students with one another, as well as with other students who have demonstrated an interest in and support for the experience and culture of Black students, and introduce them to the social, spiritual and academic aspects of life under the Dome. Student leaders will share their experiences through talks, and there is time for small group discussions in a warm, welcoming environment. Time is made for games, fun, fellowship to help foster new friendships, and conversations that matter.

What is a retreat? What can I expect?

A retreat is a time to withdraw, or “retreat,” from the busyness of everyday life to make time for reflection and connection with community and God. During this First-Year Retreat, upperclassmen will share stories about their college experiences, create spaces for you to share about your culture and spirituality, and lead exciting games and activities! Come prepared to meet friendly faces, have fun, and get deep.

When is the retreat?

The retreat will take place Friday, August 30 at 5 p.m. to Saturday, August 31 at 6 p.m. (including travel to and from the retreat center).

Who can attend?

This retreat is open to all first-year Notre Dame, Holy Cross College, or Saint Mary's students, and it is especially geared toward students of Black and/or African descent.

Where is the retreat?

This year’s retreat will be held at Lake James Christian Camp in Angola, IN, about one hour and 15 minutes away from campus. All students will ride the provided round-trip transportation, included in the cost of the retreat.

Lake James is a beautiful summer camp featuring cabin accommodations, canoes and kayaks, and other nature activities. Please come prepared for an overnight campground stay, including sleeping bag/sheets, bug spray, and athletic shoes. A full packing list will follow!

How much does the retreat cost?

The cost of registration for the retreat is $20. If you would like financial assistance, please do not hesitate to contact assistant director Alyssa Ngo at ango@nd.edu!
