Toohey Awards
The Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Awards
In 1991, the Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Awards were established to honor the memory of a Holy Cross priest who served as Director of Campus Ministry for many years. Fr. Toohey was avidly dedicated to the work of justice and the promotion of Gospel values. He was highly regarded on campus and inspired the faith life of many students, staff, and faculty, particularly through his preaching. Thus, two Toohey Awards were created: the Toohey Award for Preaching and the Toohey Award for Social Justice.

The Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Award for Preaching recognizes a Holy Cross priest who has made significant contributions to the University of Notre Dame through preaching.
Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Award for Social Justice
The Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Award for Social Justice recognizes a member of the Notre Dame faculty or staff who strives, both personally and professionally, to emphasize the social justice dimension of the Gospel in an exemplary way.
Each year, the Toohey Award winners are recognized at a Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart near the end of the Spring Semester. Winners also receive a plaque of recognition and a monetary stipend.
