Sacred Heart Consecration

In the tradition of the Congregation of Holy Cross, which has long held a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart, and following the lead of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, who recently consecrated the United States, the University of Notre Dame consecrated the campus community to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

On Friday, September 25, 2026, the University of Notre Dame was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus beginning with a celebration of the Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne–South Bend, preached and presided, and University President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., served as concelebrant.

After the Mass, there was a Eucharistic procession to the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue for the consecration, where Bishop Rhoades and University leaders prayed for healing, for an end to divisions, and for strength to follow Christ’s call to selfless love.

Through consecration, we entrust our entire campus community and all members of our Notre Dame family to Christ’s mercy, praying for healing, an end to divisions, and for strength to follow Christ’s call to selfless love.
