Sacred Heart Consecration

In the tradition of the Congregation of Holy Cross, which has long held a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart, and following the lead of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, who recently consecrated the United States, the University of Notre Dame will consecrate the campus community to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

On Friday, September 25, 2026, all are welcome to join the campus consecration at the celebration of the 5:15 p.m. Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, will preach and preside.

Following Mass, there will be a procession from the Basilica to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Statue, followed by a reception in the Rotunda on the second floor of the Main Building.

Through consecration, we entrust our entire campus community and all members of our Notre Dame family to Christ’s mercy, praying for healing, an end to divisions, and for strength to follow Christ’s call to selfless love.

In preparation for the campus consecration, all are also welcome to attend a panel discussion on the Sacred Heart on Monday, September 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in McKenna Hall Auditorium. The panel is sponsored by the de Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture and the McGrath Institute for Church Life.

On Friday, October 2, 2026, the Browning Cinema in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center will host a screening of Sacré Cœur at 6:30 p.m. The film offers a reflection on devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and its enduring significance in the life of the Church. The screening is free and open to all, but tickets are required.

For those unable to join in person, the Mass will be livestreamed on the Basilica of the Sacred Heart website.
