Holy Week Pilgrimage in Rome

This year, Campus Ministry is offering a pilgrimage to Rome during Holy Week for any Notre Dame student concurrently studying abroad in Europe.  The highlight of the pilgrimage will be Easter Sunday mass with the Pope in St. Peter's Square!  Students are responsible for planning travel to Rome as well as for lodging, food, and personal expenses.  There are two options for participation in the pilgrimage during Holy Week 2023:

Option 1:  Full-Track Pilgrimage

The Full-Track Pilgrimage includes visits to many of Rome’s historically significant churches and religious sites, structured time for prayer and reflection, and awe-inspiring Triduum liturgies in a variety of settings (and languages!) from Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.  The Full-Track Pilgrimage will be a wonderful way to spiritually enter into and reflect upon our Lord’s Passion and Resurrection.

The Full-Track Pilgrimage is limited to the first 40 students who register and does require participation in all events (understanding that travel to/from the pilgrimage will vary with each student).  If you have a conflict with your arrival into or departure from Rome, please notify us ahead of time.  Cost is $40 and can be paid online during registration.  Easter Sunday Mass ticket, Thursday night dinner, and a closing reception are included with registration.

Basic Schedule for the Full-Track Pilgrimage:

  • Holy Thursday, April 6:  Includes Liturgy of the Last Supper (gathering at 4 p.m.) at Santa Maria in Trastevere, dinner, and walking pilgrimage of Rome churches

  • Good Friday, April 7:  Visit to the Passion Relics at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Scala Sancta (“Holy Stairs”), St. John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, Good Friday liturgy, and (optional) Stations of the Cross at the Coliseum

  • Holy Saturday, April 8  Morning prayer and tour at St. Peter’s Basilica, afternoon at St. Paul Outside the Walls, and (optional) Easter Vigil service.

  • Easter Sunday, April 9:  Mass with Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City at 10:00 am (ticket required; ticket for this mass is included with registration for the Full-Track Pilgrimage) and early-evening closing reception at the Rome Global Gateway.

Option 2:  Easter Sunday Track

The Easter Sunday Track includes all events on Easter Sunday.  Cost is $10 and can be paid online during registration.  Easter Sunday Mass ticket and closing reception are included with registration.

  • Easter Sunday, April 9:  Mass with Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City at 10:00 a.m. (ticket required; ticket for this mass is included with registration for the Easter Sunday Track) and early-evening closing reception at the Rome Global Gateway.

Registration

Both tracks require advanced registration with Campus Ministry.  Notre Dame has 150 tickets for Easter Sunday Mass at the Vatican, so registration is limited to the first 40 students for the Full-Track Pilgrimage and 110 students for the Easter Sunday Track.  Notre Dame students who are concurrently studying abroad in Europe have first priority in receiving a ticket to Easter Sunday Mass.  If registration fills, a waiting list will be taken.  Students may only register for one (1) ticket.

Register Now - Easter Sunday Track

The registration deadline for either track is Sunday, March 12, 2023.  Any cancellations made after this date are non-refundable.

Reminder: Notre Dame students who are concurrently studying abroad receive first priority for these spots.  We often get many requests from students of other universities, friends, or family members who will also be in Rome during Holy Week.  For more information on requesting tickets to the papal liturgies or audiences, please contact the Bishop’s Office for U.S. Visitors to the Vatican on The Pontifical North American College website.
