Muslim Student Resources

The meaning of Islam is submission and obedience to God, the creator of all. The word also implies “peace” which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of God. Muslims believe that all of God’s prophets, which include Adam, Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus through to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), delivered the message of God to mankind; calling them to the worship of the One true God, the message of Pure Monotheism and establish piety on earth. Hence, it was not a new religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in Arabia in the seventh century as many people mistakenly think, but only the true religion of God re-expressed in its final form.

Muslims, Christians and Jews believe in the same God as all of them follow the same Abrahamic faith. ’Allah’ is the same word for God which is used by Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians. The most important core of Islam is the Qur’an. The Qur’an is the literal word of God, which He revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through the Angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. The Qur’an has been preserved in its original form since the death of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) some 1300 yrs ago.

There is an active Muslim Student Association at Notre Dame. The goal of the organization is to provide resources for Muslims as well as to cultivate understanding and respect with other faiths. The MSA has arranged Qur’an reading group, dinners, lectures, films, comedy shows in the past.
