Eastern Orthodox Student Resources

It is no surprise that the University of Notre Dame is rooted in Catholic Christian faith and tradition. The rich liturgical expression as celebrated on our campus, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and in the residence hall chapels, proclaims a direct connection with historic, apostolic, Biblical Christian faith and practice. As close brethren in Christ with much common spiritual heritage, Notre Dame specifically welcomes to the campus members of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. Many Eastern Orthodox students grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ while at Notre Dame by entering into prayer experiences with fellow students, attending retreats, and engaging in opportunities for direct service to the poor.
Nearly all Campus Ministry programs are open to students of all Christian faith traditions. In particular, Notre Dame offers a chapter of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship, a ministry that encourages fellowship among Eastern Orthodox students, informs the Notre Dame community of the unique cultural and spiritual heritage of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, promotes awareness of the wonderful ongoing dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox Churches and the Roman Catholic Church, and assists Eastern Orthodox students in finding a ride to local churches. In addition, Campus Ministry also offers Bible studies, prayer and faith-sharing groups, and spiritual direction and counseling for students of various faith traditions.
FAQ
If I’m Eastern Orthodox, can I receive Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass?
Students and all members of the Notre Dame community are always welcome and encouraged to attend Mass on campus at the University of Notre Dame. When it comes to the reception of Holy Communion, members of the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, however, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Holy Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 § 3).
Anyone not receiving Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass at Notre Dame is nevertheless invited to come forward to receive a blessing from a minister of Holy Communion. Please indicate your desire to receive this blessing by crossing your arms over your chest as you approach the minister of Holy Communion.
